PROGRAM
In Rebecca Saunders’ “Skin,” the largest human sensory organ symbolizes the protection we lack when skinned, the inevitable aging process evident in skin, and the sense of touch. The work was written for and with the soprano Juliet Fraser on a text by Saunders. In her quintet, Birgitta Muntendorf explores the phenomenon that every sound has an inherent reaction that we can find in space, as resonance or in ourselves. Zesses Seglias composed his ‘Madrigali’ for PHACE, which refer to these Renaissance vocal works but are sung by the musicians themselves along with their playing, like an echo from a bygone era.
