With »Phantom« – based on a story by Gerhard Hauptmann – Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau staged an “Amour fou par excellence” against the background of bourgeois small town life. Lorenz Lubota, a poor bookworm and would-be poet, meets the beautiful and rich Veronika from a good family. Obsessed by the beauty and unreachability of Veronica, he increasingly loses touch with reality and takes on vice and debt to move closer to the unattainable phantom of his desire, sliding ever deeper into his own surreal dream world.
With Wolfgang Mitterer, the Vienna Konzerthaus, together with the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and PHACE, commissioned one of the most accomplished composers of our time to compose the music for this psychological drama.
