commissioned by PHACE, supported by Wiener Konzerthaus

Notation has a central role in the works of Christoph Herndler. His scores are precisely designed geometrical graphics and can be viewed as artworks themselves. The visual construct of notation serves simultaneously as a principle of organization and as a means of producing unforeseen musical situations and acoustically amazing moments. The rigid geometric shapes provide a regulated procedure composed of free musical spaces. As a self-organizing system, this form of order can do without a conductor because all participants have, at all times, the entire form of the composition in front of their eyes. The musical form and the listening experience in Buche und Blatt (Beech and leaf) are therefore created from an anti-hierarchical and equal interaction between musicians, guided by a shared visual level. The concrete acoustic events are therefore less consequence of a personal and improvisational expression of the instrumentalists, rather, variability and variety of the music are already recognized in the notation and arise directly from the geometry.
