In celebration of the 100th season’s anniversary, the Wiener Konzerthaus launches a new cycle for contemporary music featuring PHACE at the Berio Hall. In four concerts, we are going to demonstrate a variety of approaches to contemporary music, the combination of music and film and to forms of instrumental theatre. Features of the programme are multimediality, a close collaboration with the composers and specific forms of communication between ensemble, music and audience.

In the first season, the compositions range from Xenakis and Varèse to several world premieres, among them one oft he prize winners oft he Wiener Konzerthaus Kompositionswettbewerb “Towards the Next 100 Years”, to a Japanese silent movie classic from 1926, for which Gene Coleman wrote a new score combining traditional and contemporary sounds. Jorge Sánchez-Chiong, our next composer in residence, is going to compose a new work for saxophone and small ensemble. In a collaborative scenic production with the Kabinetttheater, the audience will begin to understand how humoristic Mauricio Kagel’s compositions really are.
