The musicians of PHACE appear in the Minoritenkirche sound space as light and shadow players: they follow the movements of giant northern lights that Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho saw moving across the arctic sky and inspired them to the form and language of their work “Lichtbogen”. Flickering and fluttering sound tracks seem to reflect the heavenly play of light. In the work “Talea” by the Frenchman François Sarhan, melodies and rhythms circle the audience at different tempos, just as planets, satellites and other celestial bodies move their own circles: a “Harmonice mundi” in the dark sound space. “Lightness” by Brit Juliana Hodkinson is a fireworks music of the quiet kind: three musicians play with the amplified sound of matches, matchboxes, sandpaper, water and sand. PHACE will also premiere a highly anticipated new work by the Moscow composer Alexandra Karastoyanova Hermentin, who lives in Austria.
