Together we are celebrating the 350th anniversary of the Leopold Francis University of Innsbruck and the 50th anniversary of Galerie St. Barbara. The Marini Consort Innsbruck will take us back in time to listen to the music of Emperor Leopold I and his European neighbours and adversaries – Sultan Mehmet IV in the east and Louis XIV (the Sun King) in the west. Although they tried – with partial success – to conquer the Holy Roman Empire, Leopold I was able to maintain his influence and expand his territory. With his absolutist style of rule, he also made use of music as an expression of his power.
The programme includes Turkish music as well as works by Fux, Lully, Leopold I and others. The Ensemble Phace will also lead us into the here and now (300 to 350 years later), with Wolfgang Mitterer as the mediator between the worlds, combining the different periods in a composition commissioned especially for the anniversary. The contemporary framework around this focus is provided by the Turkish composer Zeynep Gedizlioğlu (who also explores feelings about political developments in her music), Odeh-Tamimi (a Palestinian-Israeli artist who combines musical practice with Western European avant-garde) and Gérard Grisey.
